The name "Pryor" was the name of a prominent Colonial-Era Virginia family.  I am working on finding older ancestors of this John Pryor Yates to see if there is a connection. ]

In 1844,  John P. Yates (age 72), & Sarah Martin (age 54) & Family moved from the Nashville, Tennessee area to Pope County, Arkansas - - north of the county seat of Russellville.
Their area was the settlement of Laurel, north of Hector, North Fork Township (now Simpson Township) on the North Fork of the Illinois Bayou (a river), which flows into the Arkansas River at Russellville.  The Laurel settlement was in the Boston Mountains, the the highest section of the Ozarks in what is now the Ozark National Forest.

Going along with the Yates family from Tennessee to Arkansas was
Samuel King Hudson (1817-1906, age 25), who that year -- in either Tennessee or Arkansas -- married the 2nd Yates daughter, Elsie Yates.  [Source:  A Rootsweb online forum:  Wanda Fay Meador, History Pope County Arkansas, Vol. 1, "Samuel King Hudson," Page 283, family # 365.  Says the Yates family & Samuel King Hudson moved in 1844 together from Tennessee to the North Fork Illinois Bayou. ]

The names and ages of the Yates offspring at the time of moving from Tennessee to Arkansas:
1.   Betsy Yates (b. 1815, age 29)
2.   Elsie Yates (b. 1817, age 27)  [Married Samuel King Hudson (b.1817, Alabama) brother of Francis Marion Hudson, Sr.]

1824, age 20)
6.   Elijah M. Yates (b. 1826, age 18)

9.   John Pryor Yates  (b. 1832, age 12)  [1st husband of  Sarah Ann ("Sallie") Holmes (1834-1899).  JPY died- 1864, during Civil War.) ]
10. George Absolum Yates (
b. 1833, age 11)
11. Sarah Yates (b.1836, age 8)

What influenced the Yates family to leave Tennessee?  Robertson County -- in the Nashville area  -- was probably an up-and-coming area, while their Arkansas destination was truly "the back of beyond.  And why did they make this move at John Pryor Yates' & Sarah Martin's (relatively) advanced ages of 72 and 54?
