The practice of having children over a period of 20 years or so, and how marriages between the Duncan and Mills families are reminiscent of the song, "I'm My Own
Grandpa"

When people have children over a period of  20 years, the latest-born offspring end up being in a different generational peer group from the earliest-born offspring.  This can result in quite interesting marriage patterns.  For instance, look at these births and marriages in the Duncan and Mills-Keesee families:

1801, Fluvanna County, Virginia:  birth of Pleasant Wales Duncan
1804
, Hartsville, Tennessee area: birth of Elizabeth Mills on Aug 13 daughter of John Mills & Frances Thurmond

[ 14 years later: ]
1818
, Hartsville, Tennessee area:  Marriage of Elizabeth Mills (age 14) & Champness Keesee
1819
, Hartsville, Tennessee area:  Birth of Randolph Keesee -- son of Elizabeth Mills (age 15) & Champness Keesee
1819, Hartsville, Tennessee area:  Birth of Letitia Duncan (youngest sister of Pleasant Wales Duncan)

20 or so years later:
1838,
Hartsville, Tennessee area:  Marriage of Letitia Duncan (age 19, b: April 1819 -- youngest sister of Pleasant Wales Duncan)  to Randolph Keesee ( age 19, b. 1819, son of Elizabeth Mills with her 1st husband ( Pleasant Wales Duncan was Elizabeth's 2nd husband )
And then -- to further the Goth:

1939,
Hartsville, Tennessee areaDeath of Letitia Duncan (age 20) -- [ Ed note:  Was this from complications of childbirth? ]

Early 1840's:  Death of the mother in the Duncan family:  Elizabeth Mills Keesee Duncan, in her late 30's or early 40's -- when her last child (our ancestor, William Alexander Duncan, b.1840) was very young

Sometime in the early 1840's, the mother in this family, Elizabeth Mills Keesee Duncan, died -- in her late 30's or early 40's.  At the time, her husband Pleasant Wales Duncan was in his early 40's, and their last child was very young -- our ancestor, William Alexander Duncan, b.1840.

[ LL note:  Having 10 children in 22 years has to be very hard on your health. ]

1860, North Carolina -- a little less than 20 years after the death of Pleasant Wales Duncan's first wife:
2nd Marriage of Pleasant Wales Duncan (age 59):  to Sally Hardy (age 20, b. 1840)
( the age of Pleasant Wales Duncan's youngest child with his first wife: William Alexander Duncan, b. 1840 )

Early 1860's:   Sally Hardy Duncan went crazy and hung herself in the smokehouse.

[ LL note:  I would like to know the story around this.  Given the mix of a man 60 marrying a girl of 20, it is not too hard to imagine the scenarios. ]
